I turned on to Main Street in Downtown Ionia and was surprised to see an enormous Christmas tree standing in the intersection. It seemed rather strange to drive around the illuminated tree like a traffic circle, but it was a beautiful sight.

If you have ever been to the dune climb in the Sleeping Bear Dunes than you have seen the D.H. Day farm. It was also known as “Oswegatchi” after the New York community where his father was born and the Oswegatchi River where D. H. Day played as a boy. David Henry Day built this farm in the 1880s and its unique looking barn is one of the most photographed barns in Michigan.

Between Mancelona and Kalkaska is the breathtakingly beautiful Seven Bridges Recreation Area. It contains, you guessed it, seven bridges that cross several streams that snake their way through the landscape. There are several little waterfalls and paths to explore. If you live downstate and you want to get some photos of waterfalls and nature it is a nice little place to stop. It’s not the same as visiting Tahquanomon Falls but it is a lot closer to the southern cities in the palm of the mitten.

If you have ever made the trip out to see the Grand Traverse Lighthouse at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula you probably have seen these bright red barns. They stand along the road between the lighthouse and Northport. I have always wondered about the big barn with all the doors along the side. I am no expert on agriculture and farming and have never been able to figure out what all the doors are for.

Every holiday season the Waterworks building in Saginaw is decorated with lights. It is a magical display enjoyed by many people as they pass by the iconic building on Ezra-Rust Drive. Most people are unaware of the significance of the red white and blue lights decorating the pine tree on the corner.
In 1979, during the Iran Hostage Crisis at the Embassy in Tehran, plant supervisor Wally Rogalski had the tree decorated as a patriot gesture in honor of the hostages. The tree has been decorated with the American colors ever since then. The hostage crisis occurred a long time ago, but I think it’s also a good reminder to remember all the men and women who serve in the military at home and abroad, and the sacrifices they make for us, especially during the holidays.
If you read my post yesterday you probably know I live in Saginaw. If you are near Saginaw I hope you will come out and see me. I will be at the Arthur Hill holiday bazaar on Saturday, December 7th from 9-3. I will also be at the Antique Warehouse on Tittibiwasse on Thursday night from 6-8 signing books at their open house.

Autumn has come and gone. I get asked when is my favorite time of year to photograph and without hesitation it is Autumn. The vibrant color like nature’s fireworks only happens for a short time and then it’s only memories until next year. I know winter does not officially start until December 21st but it feels like it has started already.
The perfect day for me is a warm day with the sun shining on gold, red and yellow leaves. looks like I will have to wait about a year for that day again. In the meantime, I do have more Autumn photos to share. Thank you all for taking the time to read my posts.

I know it’s starting to warm up outside, and spring will be here soon. However, I still have a few pics from winter that I have not posted yet. I saw this little old house fighting through another Michigan blizzard near Dighton. It looks as though it has seen many winters and is close to giving up, but it’s still standing. I am looking forward to it getting warm and green again. It’s been a long and strange winter.

If you have followed Lost In Michigan for a while you have probably seen photos of Curwood Castle in Owosso. It was the writing studio of James Oliver Curwood. He was a very successful author in the early 1900’s. Reading a good book is something I like to do on a cold winter day ( shameless plug for my book HERE) and I thought I would read one of his books. I went to my local library to find out they did not have any of his books on the shelves. I went on google and found there are several of his books that can be downloaded for free. They were published so long ago that they have fallen into the Public Domain. You can download Curwood’s books on Gutenberg.org HERE I am currently reading The Flaming Forest by Curwood and it’s an excellent book.
P.S. if your wondering Gutenberg invented the printing press and there is where Gutenberg.org gets its name from. they have many classic books available for download for free.

Michigan winters can be so cruel, if it’s not the brutal cold and gusting winds it’s the heavy snow. The old Granary in Brimley which has been standing over a hundred years since it was built in 1913 could not take the weight of the snow and half of it collapsed on January 23rd, 2017. I am not sure what the fate of the old building will be. I took this photo a few years ago, sadly many places I have photographed are gone now, I guess that’s what happens when you take pics of old buildings and houses.
Besides the granary, the snow collapsed the roof on the old fire hall in Brimley next to the old wooden water tower, you can see my post with a pic of the tower HERE

I saw a post on a website that ranked the states by which states have the worse winters and Michigan was ranked #2 behind Minnesota. You can see the list HERE, Which yes we do have a long cold winter with a lot of lake effect snow coming off the Great Lakes. But then the description on the list goes on about how horrible the winter is, with it’s cold and dreary days with nothing to do.
I was born and raised in this winter wonderland, and I think it is what you make of it. If you embrace the winter months by getting out and enjoy it by snowmobiling, skiing, sledding, ice fishing or any other winter activity, Michigan can be a lot of fun in the winter, and besides I think going thru a tough winter builds character. I am proud to tell people, especially those that live down south, that I am a Michigander, and a little bit of bad weather does not stop me, and not to take the good days for granted.
