Quincy Dredge No 2

Posted on August 29, 2013 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Forgotten Places .

Quincy Dredge #2 Houghton michigan

North of Houghton and Hancock on M26 you see this giant rusting old dredge on the shoreline of Torch Lake. It’s massive, and standing next to it is kinds of eerie, it’s like a sleeping monster the size of a 3 story building. The Quincy Dredge No. 2. It was built in 1914 and sank in 1967 and has been sitting there ever since, and in 1978 the state declared it a historic site.

Kitch-iti-kipi

Posted on August 29, 2013 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Uncategorized .

The Detroit Free Press had a poll for the 7 wonders of Michigan and I was surprised that Kitch-iti-kipi was not on the list. it’s unbelievable how clear the water is and you can take a raft out into the middle of it and look down into the deep water and see fish swimming around and best of all it belongs to the `people of Michigan since it’s in the Palms Book State Park. I think the early Native Americans gave it the best name “Mirror Of Heaven”

Nothing like starting your day off with a sunrise on the east coast of Michigan at the Tawas Point State Park beach.

Guardian Angels Church

Posted on August 28, 2013 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Churches .

The Guardian Angels church near Hemlock Michigan, it’s sad to see this beautiful old church sitting alone on a old country road. I can only Imagine all the wedding and baptisms that this church has been a part of.

D H Day Barn

Posted on August 27, 2013 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Uncategorized .

The world famous D.H. Day barn near the Sleeping Bear Dunes. This has to be one of the most recognizable barns in Michigan, if not the country, so had to post a pic of it.

Downtown Owosso

Posted on August 27, 2013 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Uncategorized .

While I was in Owosso I went for a walk downtown and I would rather walk down sidewalks in the fresh air looking at storefronts of locally owned businesses then go to the mall. Owosso has so many beautiful old historic buildings it was sad to see that a lot of them are empty. This old mural caught my eye and I like how you can see a couple of different faded murals in it.

Old Home

Posted on August 26, 2013 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Uncategorized .

It’s amazing how many spooky old houses I find traveling back roads. you always hear about urban blight but not much about rural blight. This house is north east of Wolverine I am not sure if it’s haunted, do the spirits leave after the roof collapses.

Bond Falls

Posted on August 25, 2013 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Waterfalls .

This is Bond Falls way over on the western side of the U.P., when I was there the parking lot had a plethora of cars with Wisconsin plates. The Wisconsinites were all at the post filling out the visitor cards and paying, since I have a passport on my plate, I could just walk right in like a V.I.P. I make the most out of the $11 it costs for the Recreation Passport, although I do miss having the stickers on my windshield, I used to have a bunch of them plastered all over the passenger side of my windshield since I got one every year.

Downtown Omer

Posted on August 22, 2013 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Uncategorized .

The sign going into Omer says “Michigan’s Smallest City,” but according to Wikipedia Omer has 313 residents and it’s actually the second smallest city in the state as of the 2010 census. The smallest city is now Lake Angelus, with a population of 290, but Omer could always kick a few people out of town a reclaim the title.

Tawas Harbor Sunrise

Posted on August 22, 2013 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Uncategorized .

I was not sure what to post from today so I thought I would start at the beginning with a pic of the harbor in East Tawas. It was nice getting some pics of the sunrise side of Michigan, it seems like most photos I see on Pure Michigan are of the sunset side on Lake Michigan.
