Iargo Springs

Posted on November 25, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Nature, Waterfalls .

Down the road from Lumberman’s Monument is a parking area for Iargo Springs. I say parking area and not the springs because they are way down by the Au Sable River. It is about 300 steps down to the springs but it is worth the effort. It is a beautiful secluded area covered in tall trees with the water flowing over rocks and logs down to the river. If you are ever in the area and you can make the trip down the stairway and back up again ( I had to rest a few times ) be sure to see the Iargo Springs.

Alder Falls

Posted on August 11, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

I have been to a lot of different waterfalls in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula but my favorite is Adler Falls. Located northwest of Marquette it can be a little tricky to find on a two-track road off County Road 550 near Big Bay. After parking near a little wooden sign for the falls you need to hike down into a gorge to see the waterfalls. There are no steps, so it can be tricky to climb down and back up, especially for someone out of shape like me. I think that is why I like these falls so much, they are hard to access, and find, so there is not a large crowd of people, the times that I was there, no one else was around and it was a peaceful place to relax and enjoy the falls as the water rushed around the large rocks in the river.

Besides the falls, you are near the Big Bay lighthouse ( you can see my post about it HERE) and the Tavern that was made famous in the Jimmy Stewart movie Anatomy of a Murder

The Secret Manistee Waterfall in the Lower Peninsula

Posted on June 8, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Nature, Waterfalls .

Hidden deep within the Manistee National Forest is a small un-named waterfall. It is not a large waterfall, only about two feet tall, but it is a peaceful and serene little waterfall.  It is on a little creek that flows into the Manistee River a couple of miles south of the Hodenpyl Dam. The creek and waterfall do not have a name and even the sign next to them just reads “waterfall”. I have decided to call it the Manistee Falls for the forest it is in, and the Manistee river is only a few yards away.

I am guessing the creek dries up by mid-summer and the waterfalls are not flowing, so if you want to see it, spring would be the best time to do it. I don’t normally post exact locations and directions to places in my posts. I prefer to leave that for my books, but I figure since this place has limited information on the internet, I would share that info here.

Here are the coordinates for the parking area  44°20’51.4″N 85°49’42.9″W ( which someone has marked Sara’s Falls Parking)

The best way to reach the parking area is to take W 26 Rd. from M-37. Head west into the woods and it will curve to the right, but you will want to take W 26 Rd. that continues heading west. It will end at No. 1 Rd. Turn right (north) travel about a half-mile, until you see a two-track heading west. turn left and then about a half-mile at the end of the two-track is a gate and parking ara. Take the trail behind the gate about a quarter-mile to the falls. It is not too bad of a hike but it does go downhill for the last 100 yards.

if you enjoy exploring the Upper Peninsula for waterfalls, I am sure you will enjoy visiting these little waterfalls. They may not be large and impressive, but it is a fun journey and somewhere you can check off your list of places you have visited.

Alger Falls

Posted on April 11, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

South of Munising near the intersection of M-28 and M-94 is Alger Falls. It sits a little ways off the road and most people driving past probably never even see it. Alger Falls is not the most impressive waterfall in the area, but if you are visiting nearby Wagner Falls, it is a quick stop to see Alger Falls and check it off your list of waterfalls you have visited. I kind of feel like that yellowish-green evergreen tree is photobombing the waterfall but as Bob Ross would say ” It’s a happy little tree”

I still have Lost In Michigan books in stock. If you are looking for something to read and plan a trip you can order them from my website HERE

Searching for the Canyon Waterfalls

Posted on March 18, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

My son and I stopped at the Canyon Falls roadside park on US-41. We hiked a ways back into the woods and came upon the river and some small waterfalls. I took some pics and we hiked back to the jeep and headed on our way. I was doing a little research for this post and looked at the pics on Go Waterfalling and apparently I missed the best part of the falls in the lower falls.  I wish I had known or saw a sign or something but oh well just one more reason to go back to the Upper Peninsula.

On a side note, I see people ask about things to see in the U.P. and others comment on all sorts of places like the T-Falls and the Big Spring and Lake of the Clouds. I think people think they can see everything in the Upper Peninsula in one trip not realizing it is about a five-hour drive and 270 miles from the T-Falls to the Porkies.  Pick a region of the U.P. to explore, the challenge for me is not stopping on the eastern side to visit places so I can make it over to the western side.

Seven Bridges: Waterfalls In The Lower Peninsula

Posted on January 24, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Waterfalls, Winter Wonderland .

Between Mancelona and Kalkaska is the breathtakingly beautiful Seven Bridges Recreation Area. It contains, you guessed it, seven bridges that cross several streams that snake their way through the landscape. There are several little waterfalls and paths to explore. If you live downstate and you want to get some photos of waterfalls and nature it is a nice little place to stop. It’s not the same as visiting Tahquanomon Falls but it is a lot closer to the southern cities in the palm of the mitten.

If you are near Mancelona, Lost In Michigan books are available at Rooted. A Michigan products gift shop next to the Iron Skillet Restaurant.  You can get a good meal at the restaurant and pick up a copy of Lost In Michigan. you can find more about Rooted at their website by clicking HERE You cand find the website for the Iron Skillet HERE

Black River Falls

Posted on November 9, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

Black River Falls is in a rather secluded area southwest of Ishpeming. I like visiting them because it is usually quiet without anyone else around. the boulders at the bottom of the falls are huge, I would say they are about 3 feet in diameter. I climbed out onto them and set up my tripod to get this pic.

Munising Falls

Posted on July 12, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

A few miles northeast of Munising Is the Munising Falls. It is a beautiful waterfall that is fed by a spring a couple of miles upstream. The water cascades over the stone cliff as it flows into Lake Superior. A parking lot and visitor’s center is located on Sand Point Road and it is a beautiful walk to see the waterfall. If you are in the area be sure to check them out. One of my favorite things to do in the Upper Peninsula is looking for waterfalls. Some are easily accessible and some are hidden deep in the woods. If you like waterfalls be sure to check out www.gowaterfalling.com they have a lot of great info about the many waterfalls in Michigan. you can find their website HERE

Powerhouse Falls

Posted on June 27, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

A few miles south of L’Anse is Powerhouse Falls. Aptly named for the old abandoned powerhouse that is next to the falls. If you turn on west onto Dam Road and go down it about a mile it winds around to a parking lot for the falls. I have visited it before and always tried to get pics of the falls without the building but then I realized it’s the old building that makes these falls unique. It’s worth a stop if you are in the are since it’s not far out of the way if you are traveling down U.S.-41.

The Redridge Bridge

Posted on May 28, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Bridges, Dam, upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

When I first saw it, I was not sure if it was a bridge, dam or waterfall, or a little bit of all three. On the Salmon Trout River near the town of Redridge is this massive steel structure. It has water flowing underneath and from its rusty girders, it looks as if it has been standing for a long time.  It was one of only three steel dams of its type in the United States and it was constructed in 1901.  The dam was built to create a reservoir for the Atlantic Stamping Mill in Redridge. The mill is gone but water still flows over the dam.

Redride is in the Keweenaw and west of Houghton, It’s not far from the ruins in Freda, you can read about them in my post HERE
