Bond Falls

Posted on December 1, 2023 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

Bond Falls are in the western Upper Peninsula near Paulding. It is an impressive waterfall that is almost 100 feet wide and a drop of about 50 feet. It is a scenic site managed by the Michigan DNR and has view platforms to get great views of the water cascading down the rocks. It is probably the second most popular waterfall in Michigan after the Tahquamenon Falls.

If you love exploring the Upper Peninsula or reading about its unique places, I hope you will take a look at my new book LOST IN MICHIGAN’S UPPER PENINSULA available on Amazon HERE

Alder Falls

Posted on August 21, 2023 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

I have been to a lot of different waterfalls in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula but my favorite is Alder Falls. Located northwest of Marquette it can be a little tricky to find on a two-track road off County Road 550 near Big Bay. After parking near a little wooden sign for the falls you need to hike down into a gorge to see the waterfalls. There are no steps, so it can be tricky to climb down and back up, especially for someone out of shape like me. I think that is why I like these falls so much, they are hard to access, and find, so there is not a large crowd of people. When I was there, no one else was around and it was a peaceful place to relax and enjoy the falls as the water rushed around the large rocks in the river.

Besides the falls, you are near the Big Bay lighthouse ( you can see my post about it HERE) and the Tavern that was made famous in the Jimmy Stewart movie Anatomy of a Murder

Fumee Falls

Posted on May 31, 2022 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

Near the small town of Quinnesec is a roadside park on US-2. The Fumee Creek flows through the middle of it and has a beautiful waterfall. They may not be the largest waterfall in the Upper Peninsula but it is a nice place to take a break from a long journey across the U.P. along US-2.

Wyandotte Falls

Posted on April 1, 2022 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

Located along the Misery River the Wyandotte Falls are west of Lake Roland and Lake Gerald ( the Twin Lakes ) in the Keweenaw Peninsula. I am not sure why the Misery River has a sorrowful name but it was far from a miserable experience when I visited the falls. It was a beautiful hike through the woods as the sun shone through the enormous trees onto the moss covered rocks.

The falls are located about a mile off M-26 on Poyhonen Road near Twin Lakes State Park. It is a little bit of a hike from the parking area and the trail is covered in tree roots but it is worth the effort to see these waterfalls.

Wyandotte Falls in the Sunlight

Posted on October 26, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

It was late in the day when I visited Wyandotte Falls. The sun was shining through the trees illuminating the water as it cascades down across the rocky landscape. The falls are located about a mile off M-26 on Poyhonen Road near Twin Lakes State Park. It is a little bit of a hike from the parking area and the trail is covered in tree roots but it is worth the effort to see these waterfalls.

Tioga Creek

Posted on October 18, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

Michigan has several nice little roadside parks in the Upper Peninsula. They are always a nice place to stop and take a break on a long road trip. I especially like the ones with a waterfall like the one at Tioga Creek where it crosses US-41 bwtween L’Anse and Ishpeming. There is also a waterfall a couple hundred yards into the woods but that is a post for a different day.

The Backside of the Tahquamenon Falls

Posted on October 16, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

I have been visiting the Tahquamenon Falls for decades and marveled at its beauty. In my photos of the Upper Falls, I have noticed a platform on the other side. I looked on Google maps and there is a road that heads up towards the falls from the backside of the river.

On my most recent trip to the falls this Autumn I took the trip through the woods to see if I could get to the platform on the other side. I drove down the forest roads for over 30 minutes, I noticed a lot of signs for private hunting clubs and I began to get that sinking feeling that there was a reason why I have seen few photos from the opposite side of the falls.

As I got within a couple of miles of the falls it finally happened. I hit a gate and signs for private property. I was disappointed that my journey had come to an end but it was a beautiful ride through the woods on an Autumn day. I figured there was a chance that I may fail in my attempt but I knew that if I didn’t try then my curiosity would bother me for years as I wondered if I could make it to the other side. So if you have seen that platform and have wondered about it now you know that it is not accessible.

Irontone Spring

Posted on October 8, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Nature, Waterfalls .

North of Gaylord on old 27 is a roadside park. A small creek runs through it with a couple of bridges that cross the flowing water. The water comes from a natural spring known as the Irontone Spring. The park is Frank Wilkinson Park named in honor of Frank Wilkinson who was the first Otsego County road commissioner. He owned the property and deeded it to the county after his death. Next time you are heading up north take a break from I-75 and travel along old 27. Be sure to stop at the little roadside park at Irontone Springs.

A Roadside Waterfall

Posted on October 2, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

warner falls michgian
I know there are some grand and impressive waterfalls in Michigan, like the Tahquamenon falls or Bond Falls. Warner falls is probably not the most impressive waterfall in Michigan, but it is a nice little waterfall along M-35 south of Palmer in the Upper Peninsula. If you’re like me, and have to see all the waterfalls in Michigan, then this is a nice little waterfall and a nice place to stop and stretch your legs for a few minutes too.

Hamilton’s Waterfall

Posted on August 22, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Dam, Waterfalls .

The town of Hamilton lies between Holland and Allegan in the southwest corner of Michigan. The Rabbit River winds its way through the center of town. It may not be a natural waterfall but a small dam or weir along with a historic wooden train trestle makes for a picturesque scene.
