Brundage Wilderness Cemetery

Posted on October 31, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Cemetery .

Brundage Wilderness Cemetery is located between Interlochen and Honor in ( you guessed it ) the wilderness. It sits along Brundage Creek and from what I could see the oldest tombstone is for Emeline Brundage who died in 1874. Many of her relatives are also buried in the old part of the cemetery so I assume that is where the cemetery and creek get their name from.  It is a rather secluded cemetery but there are some recent burials. I always thought it was a little strange that I find these old cemeteries interesting but I have learned a lot of you out there in internet land like these old cemeteries also. If you are ever near the base of the Leelanau Peninsula be sure to visit this wilderness cemetery off N. Carmean Road.

Herman House

Posted on October 30, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Houses, upper peninsula .

This large old house-looking building sits in the town of Herman. The town (or what is left of it) is in the Huron Mountains southeast of L’Anse in the Upper Peninsula. On December 19, 1996, the town received one of the largest snowfalls in Michigan history, with 30 inches of the white stuff falling in the single da. I wonder if that is why the roof has caved in. I am also wondering if this was a boarding house. You can’t see it in this photo but the trees are covering a large portion of the building. I think this was a place where lumberjacks would have lived way back in the day. If wall could talk I wonder what stories this old place would tell.

Note. I only take pics from the road and do not trespass. If you go out exploring please be respectful.

Cemetery Chapel

Posted on October 29, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Cemetery .

This beautiful stone chapel sits near the entrance to Saginaw’s Forest Lawn Cemetery. It was constructed in 1900 from Bay Port stone. It was built at a time when people would picnic at the cemetery to remember their loved ones. Cemeteries were a landscaped and park-like place to spend a day and the Forrest Lawn cemetery is a beautiful graveyard with impressive family monuments and headstones.

The Disappearance of Thoringtonville

Posted on October 28, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools .

I came across this old schoolhouse west of Romeo. I found out it was in Washington Township and called the Thorington school. When I looked on google maps it shows the name of Thoringtonville. I looked for some history of the town, and I could not find any. I looked in my reference books but it was not listed. I am thinking the town never had a post office since that is what usually identified most towns in Michigan.  Maybe the little town is lost to history, but the old school still stands.
Note: I do not trespass and take my photos from public roads.

Grand Ledge in Fitzgerald Park

Posted on October 27, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Parks .

The town of Grand Ledge is west of Lansing. As you can guess it is named for the ledges along the Grand River. Fitzgerald Park is named for former Michigan Governor Frank Fitzgerald. If you are looking for somewhere in lower Michigan to hike and explore the park has several trails along the river and rocky cliffs. It reminds me of hiking in the Keweenaw Peninsula without the long drive from southern Michigan.

P.S. If you go. The park is an Eaton County park and there is a $5 entrance fee but it is worth every penny, especially when the leaves are at their peak.

P.P.S. Thank you to everyone that came out to last night’s presentation at the Milford Independent Cinema. It was a lot of fun. If you missed it my next presentation is

Wyandotte Falls in the Sunlight

Posted on October 26, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

It was late in the day when I visited Wyandotte Falls. The sun was shining through the trees illuminating the water as it cascades down across the rocky landscape. The falls are located about a mile off M-26 on Poyhonen Road near Twin Lakes State Park. It is a little bit of a hike from the parking area and the trail is covered in tree roots but it is worth the effort to see these waterfalls.

Hagensville Ghost Town

Posted on October 25, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Ghost towns .

This old building stands north of Alpena and is surrounded by farmland. From what I found on the map I can only assume it was part of the town of Hagensville.  According to records, I found the Post Office was open from 1886 to 1912 and that William Hagen was the first postmaster. He and Wilson Pines owned the local sawmill.

Barn in the Woods

Posted on October 24, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Barns and Farms .

This old barn sits among the trees at the Groen Nature Preserve near Johannesburg. I am thinking it is a rather old barn with its stone foundation. If you want a nice place to take a hike in the woods be sure to check out the preserve. It has an old ghost town, resort and lots of old vehicles to explore.

Reminder I will be at Milford Independent Cinemas on Tuesday, Oct 26th at 7:00 for my presentation on spooky places around Michigan. If you are in the area I hope you will see my presentation.

The Road Along the Peshekee River

Posted on October 23, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Nature, upper peninsula .

The Peshekee River is a tributary of Lake Michigamme and flows through the Huron Mountains. The Peshenkee Grade ( county rd 607 ) runs along the rocky river. It was originally part of a failed railroad that ran through the Huron Mountains. It is a beautiful drive as it meanders along the river and crosses it at a few spots. The recently paved section of the road is a wonderful drive. The old pavement is probably the roughest paved road that I have ever driven down. I am assuming it is from all the heavy logging trucks hauling timber. Anyways, it is still worth a trip down this historic road and if you travel far enough you can find the Rock Cut for the old railroad. You can see my post for it HERE.

The Windmill of Pompeii

Posted on October 22, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms .

I saw this old windmill near Pompeii. It’s a small town in the central Lower Peninsula. I assume at one time a farm stood near the windmill when it was not so old. Most of the old windmills I see are broken. It was nice to see this one with all of its vanes still intact.
