Seven Bridges: Waterfalls In The Lower Peninsula

Posted on January 24, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Waterfalls, Winter Wonderland .

Between Mancelona and Kalkaska is the breathtakingly beautiful Seven Bridges Recreation Area. It contains, you guessed it, seven bridges that cross several streams that snake their way through the landscape. There are several little waterfalls and paths to explore. If you live downstate and you want to get some photos of waterfalls and nature it is a nice little place to stop. It’s not the same as visiting Tahquanomon Falls but it is a lot closer to the southern cities in the palm of the mitten.

If you are near Mancelona, Lost In Michigan books are available at Rooted. A Michigan products gift shop next to the Iron Skillet Restaurant.  You can get a good meal at the restaurant and pick up a copy of Lost In Michigan. you can find more about Rooted at their website by clicking HERE You cand find the website for the Iron Skillet HERE

Black River Falls

Posted on November 9, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

Black River Falls is in a rather secluded area southwest of Ishpeming. I like visiting them because it is usually quiet without anyone else around. the boulders at the bottom of the falls are huge, I would say they are about 3 feet in diameter. I climbed out onto them and set up my tripod to get this pic.

Munising Falls

Posted on July 12, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

A few miles northeast of Munising Is the Munising Falls. It is a beautiful waterfall that is fed by a spring a couple of miles upstream. The water cascades over the stone cliff as it flows into Lake Superior. A parking lot and visitor’s center is located on Sand Point Road and it is a beautiful walk to see the waterfall. If you are in the area be sure to check them out. One of my favorite things to do in the Upper Peninsula is looking for waterfalls. Some are easily accessible and some are hidden deep in the woods. If you like waterfalls be sure to check out www.gowaterfalling.com they have a lot of great info about the many waterfalls in Michigan. you can find their website HERE

The Redridge Bridge

Posted on May 28, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Bridges, Dam, upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

When I first saw it, I was not sure if it was a bridge, dam or waterfall, or a little bit of all three. On the Salmon Trout River near the town of Redridge is this massive steel structure. It has water flowing underneath and from its rusty girders, it looks as if it has been standing for a long time.  It was one of only three steel dams of its type in the United States and it was constructed in 1901.  The dam was built to create a reservoir for the Atlantic Stamping Mill in Redridge. The mill is gone but water still flows over the dam.

Redridge is in the Keweenaw and west of Houghton, It’s not far from the ruins in Freda, you can read about them in my post HERE

The Best Dam Waterfall in Michigan

Posted on November 13, 2017 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Dam, Waterfalls .

In 1971 a dam was built on the Flint River creating C.S. Mott Lake. at the end of the dam near the walking path is a series of concrete steps and blocks that the water cascades down as it flows down the river. It’s a marvelous addition to what would have been an ordinary dam. You should check it out, especially if you love waterfalls.  Here is a link to Genesee County Parks website where you can see the falls.

Michigan Stairways to Heaven

The stairway to Iargo Springs on the AuSable River

It seems like some of the most beautiful places in Michigan involve climbing stairs, and for someone like me that is allergic to stairs, it can make getting to these places a little challenging. I know it’s going to be an arduous trip when there is a warning sign at the top or bottom of the stairs telling you how many steps there will be. Even though it can be a lot of work transcending the stairway, I find in the end it’s always worth it, not only to see the magnificent beauty at the other end of the stairs, but to be able to say you did it. Some of my favorite places in no particular order are: Iargo Springs, Tahquamenon Falls, Sable Falls, Arch Rock on Mackinac Island or the spiral staircase of any lighthouse.

The Lower Tahquamenon Falls

Posted on October 25, 2016 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

“Just go with the flow, like a twig on a mighty river” Del Griffith

I got some pics at Tahquonomon Falls state park, and since I mostly see photos of the upper falls, I figure I would post a pic from the lower falls. I like visiting both when I get the chance to see the falls, but it seems like the upper falls are more popular, maybe because they are taller, or maybe because there is beer there. ( that seems to boos the popularity of just about anything)  I do like the lower falls and I still need to rent a boat or kayak to get out to the falls way in the back, I guess on another trip when it’s warmer, and I have more time.

The Breathtaking Beauty of Iargo Springs

Posted on October 24, 2016 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Landscapes, Waterfalls .

Iargo Springs Michigan

Lying off of River Road National Scenic Byway in the Huron National Forest west of Oscoda, Iargo Springs provides a panoramic view of the Au Sable River. Used as a drinking water source since pre-settlement times, dams were constructed on the springs by early loggers before the turn of the century. The dams were useful in diverting water to the logging camps nearby. Most of Cooke Pond was dry land then.

Europeans have visited the springs for recreation since the 1920s. A trail to the springs was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corpsin 1934. Early photographs show the dam being repaired and reinforced by the CCC’s. The dams lasted until 1981 when a storm took them out. The site was renovated in 1991. Steps were added and boardwalks along the springs, as well as the dams being rebuilt.

Getting Lost in Alder Falls

Posted on August 17, 2016 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in upper peninsula, Waterfalls .

Alder Water Falls Michigan
I have been to a lot of different waterfalls in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula but my favorite is Adler Falls. Located northwest of Marquette it can be a little tricky to find on a two-track road off County Road 550 near Big Bay. After parking near a little wooden sign for the falls you need to hike down into a gorge to see the waterfalls. There are no steps, so it can be tricky to climb down and back up, especially for someone out of shape like me. I think that is why I like these falls so much, they are hard to access, and find, so there is not a large crowd of people, the times that I was there, no one else was around and it was a peaceful place to relax and enjoy the falls as the water rushed around the large rocks in the river.

Besides the falls, you are near the Big Bay lighthouse ( you can see my post about it HERE) and the Tavern that was made famous in the Jimmy Stewart movie Anatomy of a Murder

Bond Falls Scenic Site is a Site to See

Posted on June 16, 2016 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Waterfalls .

bond falls michigan waterfall

Bond Falls near Paulding in the west side of the Upper Peninsula is a truly magnificent waterfall to see. It’s a Scenic Site maintained by the DNR, and if you have a recreation passport on your vehicle registration, then you can visit without having to stop and pay for a pass like all the people I saw from Wisconsin doing.  It’s a long trip from ” The bridge” across the U.P. to see them, but it’s worth the trip, and there are several trails and boardwalks to allow for different viewing locations with multiple waterfalls along the Ontonagon River to view and photograph.
