The House Thermometer

Posted on January 23, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms, Forgotten Places, Houses .

I saw this old farmhouse somewhere in central Michigan. I took some pics of it from the road and when I got back home to my computer I zoomed in on the photo. I was wondering about the yellow square on the side of the house. It looks like it was an old thermometer. I think it is broken since the needle is pointing somewhere warm. But I am not sure since the numbers are worn off the old metal thermometer. I did not need a gage to tell me what the temp was outside. with the snow and the wind whipping across the empty farm fields, I knew it was cold out.

The Red Barns of Leelanau

Posted on January 18, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms, Winter Wonderland .

If you have ever made the trip out to see the Grand Traverse Lighthouse at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula you probably have seen these bright red barns. They stand along the road between the lighthouse and Northport. I have always wondered about the big barn with all the doors along the side. I am no expert on agriculture and farming and have never been able to figure out what all the doors are for.

Michigan’s Nativity Barn

Posted on December 22, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms .

A few months ago I saw this old barn near Lakeview with a nativity scene depicted in the upper window. I stopped immediately and took a pic of it. I figured now that we are close to Christmas today is a great day to share my pic of the nativity barn.

Grateful

Posted on November 28, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Barns and Farms, Houses .

I was not sure what to post today since it is one of the most important days of the year. A day set aside to reflect on our good fortune and be thankful for the blessing we have been given. I have been blessed with a kind and supportive family. I live in the United State of America and in my favorite state of Michigan.

I am grateful that you take the time to read my daily posts. I do my best to post something random and interesting. I hope to post something in your area or city where you live. And if not you will find someone else home to be worth learning about. What makes this journey of mine through the mitten state is that you get to experience it with me through the world wide web.

I hope you and your family had a wonderful thanksgiving. I am not sure where I am going next or what I will post tomorrow but I hope you will enjoy reading it.

P.S. I saw this old house somewhere near Gaylord. I am grateful for all those Americans who have worked so hard over the years to provide us with what we have today.

Hillsdale Poor Farm

Posted on November 27, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms, Historic Places .

This old cobblestone house served as the poor farm in Hillsdale from 1853 to 1867. It housed people in the county who could not take care of themselves financially or mentally. The Poet Will Carleton who graduated from Hillsdale College was inspired by this house to write the poem. “Over the Hill to the Poor House” which captured the nation’s attention to the plight of the elderly in American society.

Better Days

Posted on November 22, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms .

I saw this old barn somewhere east of Grand Rapids. It looks like it has seen better days but it is still standing. I am not a farmer and have been a city kid my whole life, but I am thinking this season of rain and snow must have been challenging for the farmers.

If you are reading this you are among the first to find out I finally received my first shipment of Volume 3 books. I have a limited supply so I will do an official announcement at a later date. Barn Find

Posted on November 8, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Barns and Farms .

I stumbled across this barn while hiking in the Louis M. Groen Nature Preserve near Gaylord. It’s one of my favorite photos from this fall. I wish the leaves would stay at peak longer, but I guess that is what makes Autumn so special.

Lost In Michigan T-Shirts are available to order for a limited time. Some people have asked me for them. I made some and you can order them until Nov. 20th. After that, I have two bazaars in Bay City at Handy on Nov 23rd and in Saginaw at Arthur Hill on December 7th. It’s too hard for me to keep track of inventory while I am doing bazaars. If you want a shirt now is the time to order one

If you want a shirt while they are ON SALE you can order them HERE

Applegate Barn

Posted on October 31, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Barns and Farms, Thumb .

I was zig-zagging my way across the Thumb when I saw this old barn hanging out with the Autumn trees. I could not tell you where it is located or probably even find it again. I was not paying close attention to the names of the roads I was traveling down. I know it is somewhere near Applegate but don’t ask me where I am just wondering a traveler seeing what I can discover along the way. There is no better place to get lost than Michigan in Autumn.

Reminder: My next presentation will be in Omer on Monday, November 4th at the historic Masonic Lodge at 7 pm.

The Short Barn Part 2

Posted on October 11, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms .

This is the first time I have done a follow-up on one of my posts. After reading all the comments that the barn I posted about was in the side of a steep slope I went back on google streets and looked at it. I guess I did not notice it when I went past it, but it is on a hillside. It still seems a little short but others have suggested that it was a dairy or sheep barn which would make sense because there is a row of windows along the side like cows could get some fresh air.

Thank you all for your comments hand helping this city boy learn something new. I think schools should teach kids where their food comes from. I bet if you ask most of them would say ” the cafateria”

Reminder, If you live near Marysville ( south of Port Huron ) or want to take a trip, I will be giving a presentation at the library on Monday, Oct, 21st at 6 pm, you can find out more info and register HERE http://www.sccl.lib.mi.us/EventInfo.aspx?id=27001

Gaylord Barn

Posted on August 15, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms .

I was going through some of my old photos and I came across this pic of a barn I took a few summers ago. I know I was somewhere near Gaylord but I can’t remember where I was exactly when I took this pic. Anyways. I thought it was a nice looking barn on a beautiful sunny day. I hope your summer is going well and you are out exploring the Mitten State.

P.S. I might be a little sporadic with posts for the next few weeks. I am busy with finishing up my calendars and volume 3 of my book so I will have them available this fall.
