Farmhouse in the Fall

Posted on October 19, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Houses .

I saw this old farmhouse where the town Wildwood once stood. I am thinking nothing remains from the town although this old house might have been around back then. If it was, its walls are not going to share any stories but I am thinking they are enjoying watching the leaves change.

P.S. Autumn is my favorite time of year. I wish I could freeze time so the leaves could stay at their peak a little longer.

Autumn Road 2019

Posted on October 17, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn .

I took a trip up to the northern Lower Peninsula yesterday. The fall colors are spectacular. The weather was not the greatest but I did not let that stop me. I took this pic on a backroad somewhere between Vanderbilt and Gaylord. This is the perfect weekend ( October 19 and 20th ) if you want to do some leaf-peeping around Gaylord and Grayling area. The trees will be at peak color.

7 Tips for Capturing Autumn Colors in Michigan

Posted on September 23, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Photography Tips .

Once again, that magical time of year is here, yes I am talking about Autumn in Michigan. From pics of Tahquamenon Falls or the Lake of the Clouds surrounded by the glorious reds and yellows of autumn trees, to farm fields in Central Michigan or historic downtown areas, I have learned that you can get beautiful pics anywhere in Michigan. Here are some of the tips I have learned over the years.

Vannder built fall michigan

Take photos any time of day

I know you’re supposed to go out in the morning and evening in the “golden hour” but the leaves are at peak for only a short time, so don’t be afraid to take photos all day long, I found its best to have the sun behind you when you take photos, don’t shoot into the sun or the trees and barns will be in shadow.

Go out in all kinds of Weather

You know what they say” if you don’t like the weather in Michigan wait 15 minutes, it will change”. If it’s sunny and we have a nice sky then I will have a lot of sky in the photo such as farm fields or lakes. If it’s raining, then I find a location in a forest or a park with a canopy of leaves to cover the gray sky. Rainy days are also a good day to get photos of waterfalls in Michigan.

You don’t have to travel far.

I have finally learned to just go with the flow and take photos of fall colors whenever and wherever I see them.  I don’t care if I am near my house or in downtown, or halfway across the state, I am going to take the photo that presents itself, To get the most time to photograph foliage, I start north and work my way to the south following the flow of the color as it canvases the state.

Don’t force a photo that isn’t there
maybe you have your favorite spot in Michigan, and you want a photo of it, but the color is not right, the sun is at the wrong angle and you take a photo and it just looks blah, then don’t spend a lot of time trying to make it happen and go down the road and try somewhere else, and come back to your favorite spot later, remember the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, maybe a different time of day will work better or even a cloudy day.

Take a tripod, but you don’t have to use it

I always have my tripod with me but I don’t always have to use it, if it’s bright and sunny then click away, if it’s gray and dark out, then yes it’s best if you drag out that annoying thing out and use it. At least take it with you and you will have it if you need it. And remember sometimes you can set your camera on a stump or railing and that may work to stabilize your camera for a few shots so you don’t have to spend time setting up a tripod.

Keep your camera with you at all times.
you should have a camera with you so when you do see a scene you like you can capture it, and it should not be that hard to have a camera with you, most cell phones have a pretty good camera in them and I have gotten some good shots with mine, you never know you might see something you like on the way to work in the morning, stop and get a pic.

Take lots of Photos
you have a digital camera right? Take lots of photos, yeah some will be better than others but only show and share your best, and learn from the ones you don’t like, is the sun behind you, was it raining, or cloudy, I found by taking lots of pics that I like the ones I got on rainy days and how to take them.

You may have noticed from my list, you don’t need lots of fancy gear and know all your camera settings, you just need to go out and take lots of photos with whatever camera you have. Go out and just enjoy your time getting Lost In Michigan.

A Break From Winter

Posted on February 7, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Houses .

After the Polar Vortex last week and freezing rain this week, I figured I would post an older photo for a Throwback Thursday pic. I saw this Autumn photo of a house in the Bay View Association in Petoskey and figured it was a nice break from Winter. A warm sunny Autumn day in northern Michigan is a perfect day for me. Unfortunately, we don’t get many of them, especially during peak color. I hope you enjoy today’s pic and here is to better days ahead.

I have been trying to get out to get some winter pics, but I did not want to go out with the wind whipping the snow around This week has it has been raining and most of the snow is gone. I hope I can get out next week, and hopefully there is some snow otherwise it looks rather gloomy.

Maple River Shack

Posted on November 24, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Forgotten Places .

The leaves may be gone but my Autumn photos are not.  I took this pic of an old shack near the Maple River State Game Area. I wish I knew a little history or anything about it to share, but your guess is as good as mine as to its story. I could not pass up a photo of it surrounded by the golden autumn trees.

I am getting really low in wall calendar inventory. I have a bazaar coming up Saturday, Dec 4th in Saginaw and there is a good chance I will sell out of them. If you want one before they are gone you can order them HERE

Alpena’s Autumn Barn

Posted on November 14, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Barns and Farms .

I have always been a city boy, but you gotta love an old wooden barn.  Don’t ask me exactly where this barn is located, all I know is it was somewhere near Alpena. I was not paying attention to what road I was on while out roaming the backroads when I saw this barn with the bright red trees that Bob Ross would call “Sparklers.”  I was trying to think of a nice story or some history to go with this photo.  I have been busy working on a new book and my brain is a little worn out with all the thinking I have been doing. I am just gonna leave you with a Thank You until my next post.

The Shack Near Twining

Posted on November 6, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Forgotten Places .

I saw this old shack somewhere near Twining. I don’t have a story to go with it so I will take a moment to say thank you for taking the time from your busy day to read my posts. I hope you enjoy getting my emails, and I do my best to post stuff you will like to see.  Thank you so much to everyone who got a calendar or book from me. I don’t get any funding from any organizations like a visitors bureau or chamber of commerce. I do what I do out of my love for Michigan, and it’s your support that helps me continue my journey around the state.

The Old House in Norwood

Posted on November 3, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Houses .

While I was traveling along the west side of the state near Lake Michigan I came across this old house near Norwood. South of Charlevoix the little town was settled in 1866 when Orvis Wood, Lucius Pearl, and Orwin Adams built a dock and sawmill on the shore of Lake Michigan. The town thrived as a lumber-shipping center with sawmills, a company store, and blacksmith shops. Over time the little town dwindled in population as lumbering in the area died off. It’s mostly just houses now and a nice little church and historic town hall.

Congratulations to Larry Wetzel he is the winner of the Lost In Michigan book giveaway. please email me at mike@huronphoto.com with your shipping info and I will send out your book

Nirvana In Da Moonlight

Posted on October 23, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Ghost towns .

I took another whirlwind road trip over to the west coast of the state. I needed to some pics for my Camp Michigan project (HERE is a link if you are interested) After visiting Ludington and Pentwater I took the backroads towards home in the central part of the state. As it always does, the earth rotated away from the sun and it was getting dark so I got on US-10 and was heading east and I came to the area where the old logging town of Nirvana used to stand.

Nirvana was originally platted by Darwin Knight who became the towns first postmaster in 1874. He built the town near the Flint & Pere Marquette Railroad. I am not sure if Mr. Knight was Buddhist but he must have been fond of its beliefs. He gave the town the name of Nirvana which is the name of Buddhist highest heaven. He named the town’s hotel The Indra House, after Indra, the principal god of the Ayran-Vedic religion. When timber was king, eleven sawmills operated in the town. But like most of the towns in the area, once the timber was all cut down the sawmills moved, along with the people who worked at them.

Other than some of the people resting in peace in the local cemetery, I am thinking nothing remains from Nirvana’s timbering days.  In Cherry Valley Township where Nirvana once resided, I saw this old trailer with the moon rising over the trees, I guess there still is a little bit of nirvana in the area with such a peaceful scene to end a long day of traveling the beautiful Mitten State.

Upper Peninsula Color Report 2018

Posted on September 13, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn .

I was in the Upper Peninsula over the past weekend ( Sept 7-11, 2018) and I traveled along the Lake Michigan shoreline over to Menomonee and then up the Keweenaw and then along the Lake Superior shoreline to Brimley. all the days I was there it got into the upper 70’s and I think the warm weather is holding off the trees from changing colors. There were a few random sparklers as Bob Ross calls them, but other than that it was all green.  With the temps getting into the 80’s this weekend I am thinking the trees will wait even longer. I am no expert but I am thinking the trees will start the last weekend in September and maybe peek in the first half of October.

If you planning a trip to leaf peeping in the U.P. you still have a few weeks until the color will be spectacular.

by the way, if you are looking for a place to sleep,  here are some of the hotels I stayed at while I was up there.

The White House motel near Calumet.

Munising Motel

Travelers Motel near Bessemer
