Lost In Michigan Wall Calendars

Posted on October 23, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in calendars, Uncategorized .

The short version of the story is two sizes of Lost In Michigan wall calendars are available on Zazzle.com HERE

The longer version of the story is with covid and the issues I had with the Post Office losing several of my packages, and not doing presentations or bazaars, I have decided not to print my own calendars this year. I found that Zazzle.com can print and ship calendars for me. It is not ideal and the pricing is higher than what I prefer but they usually have coupon codes to lower the price. It’s not what I wanted but I have had people ask me about wall calendars so if you want one you can order them from Zazzle.com HERE Note: There are two different sizes, an 8.5×11 and an 11×14

Thank you all so much for your support. Your kindness has meant a lot to me over the years I have been doing my website. I have met so many wonderful people in person or virtually. I do my best to post things you will enjoy reading and although things have changed this year I am continuing doing what I have been and that is exploring Michigan and finding interesting places and stories to share.

The Grand Ledge in Autumn

Posted on October 18, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Nature, Parks, Uncategorized .

Along the Grand River in Fitzgerald Park are these magnificent rock outcroppings and cliffs. They truly are grand ledges and give the town they are located in its name. I find it strange that I have lived in Michigan for a half-century and have explored many places and I just now visited this wonderful place. I felt like I was hiking in the northwestern Upper Peninsula instead of the Central Lower Peninsula. If you are looking for someplace to explore, you need to check out the Grand Ledges for yourself, because you can’t capture its breathtaking beauty in a photograph.

Volume 4 Is Now Available

Posted on September 17, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Uncategorized .

People have been asking about my next book and I am happy to announce it is finally published. You can order paperback books of Lost In Michigan Volume 4 from Amazon by clicking HERE

If you enjoyed reading my other books I am sure you will like Volume 4. Thank you all for your support. It is my book sales that help me with expenses to explore Michigan and keep looking for those interesting and often overlooked places.

If you live near Saginaw I have books at Charlin’s Book Nook in Frankenmuth and at the Antique Warehouse near Zilwaukee. I have been working on getting books into bookstores, but It has been a challenge for me as an independent publisher.

Because of Covid I don’t have any presentations or book signings planned. Hopefully, things will be back to normal sometime next year and we will be able to get together then.

The Stone Building

Posted on September 14, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Forgotten Places, Uncategorized .

I saw this old stone building or house or whatever it was in a field not far from Otsego Lake near Gaylord. On the side, there is a short wide door. I am not sure if that leads to a cellar or maybe a troll lived here. I figure that is a clue as to what this old building was used for but I do not know what that was.

The Big Green House in Dowagiac

Posted on August 4, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Uncategorized .

This big green house with a round turret on the corner proudly stands in Dowagiac Thankfully a Michigan Historical Marker stands next to it giving a little bit of history about the home and the people who lived in it.

Businessman and farmer Charles M. Criffield (1867-1929) and his wife, Cora, (1865-1945) built this Queen-Anne style house in 1897. Fred Corber managed the construction. In 1920 the Criffields sold the house to Ethel and Harry H. Whiteley. Elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1914. Mr , Whiteley moved his family to Dowagiac in 1915 in order to buy into and manage the Dowagiac Daily News. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places

Harry H. Whiteley (1882-1957) used his successful Dowagiac newspaper and his position as a member of the Michigan Senate (1923-26) and the Michigan Conservation Commission (1927-48) to shape Michigan’s public land policy. He advocated for Warren Dunes and many other state parks. Sara Ethel (1882-1975), a founding member of the Samuel Felt Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, led the chapter’s effort to honor veterans of World War II with a memorial highway and park.

If you like this post and my website it would really mean a lot to me if you share it with your friends using the social media buttons at top of this post.

Ypsilanti’s Daniel L. Quirk House and Old City Hall

Posted on August 1, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Uncategorized .

Daniel Quirk house city hall Ypsilanti

Getting off U.S. 23 and heading thru Ypsilanti, there is this natural flow of traffic that takes you past the world famous historic water tower then loops around down by the river near Depot Town and past the old Fire Station and EMU, and on the loop near the river is this grand old second empire building used as offices by a local law firm. Looking at the structure, it was obviously originally built as a house, and from the size of it, someone of great wealth. Searching google, it did not take long at all to find out the house was the home of Daniel L Quirk Sr, who established the First National Bank of Ypsilanti in 1864 along with the Peninsular Paper Company in 1867. The Second Empire style home was constructed in 1860 and in 1914, it was donated to the city and served as the City Hall until 1977.

Back from Yooper Land

Posted on July 7, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Uncategorized .

I am back from my trip to the Upper Peninsula. 1450 miles, 750 photos, 10 days, 3 lighthouses 2 state parks, and an island (probably not the one you are thinking) along with countless bugs splatted on the front of my jeep. I Have lots of great stuff to share and new places I visited. Yes, I was socially distant, not many people go to where I go, and I am fine with that. I like the peace and quiet.
