Ruins of Assinins’ Orphanage

Posted on November 26, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Ghost towns, Schools, upper peninsula .

Only a small portion of the orphanage is still standing hidden behind the trees. The building once stood three stories tall and housed several children. Located in the small town, which is almost a ghost town, Assinins Is near US-41 a few miles north of Baraga.

Assinins was founded in 1843 by Bishop Frederic Baraga, who came to the area at the invitation of Chief Edward Assinins. Baraga built the Old St. Joseph Orphanage and School on the site in 1860. Over the years the orphanage was expanded and other buildings including a school were built. The structures were last used in the 1960s and in recent years they have collapsed.

This is a pic from Wikipedia of what the building looked like in 2009

The area is now a National Historic District and next time you are traveling along US-41 it’s worth a quick stop to check out the area and old cemetery.

Hillsdale

Posted on November 12, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools .

In southern central Michigan is the town of Hillsdale where you will find the campus of Hillsdale College. It was founded in 1844 by a group of Freewill Baptists organized Michigan Central College at Spring Arbor. The college was the first in Michigan to grant degrees to women. The campus was moved to Hillsdale in 1853 and chartered by the legislature in 1855, the school was renamed Hillsdale College under an independent board of trustees, its only controlling organization. The charter opened the institution “to all persons… irrespective of nationality, color or sex.”

Shaff Schoolhouse

Posted on October 28, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Schools .

This old schoolhouse is known as the Shaff School. It sits a few miles northwest of Gaylord and is one of the few remaining schoolhouses still standing in Otsego County. It has probably survived the harsh Michigan weather because it is constructed with fieldstone.

The Standard School in the Trees

Posted on October 23, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools, Thumb, Uncategorized .

On my trip to Marysville I could have taken the expressway but that would be rather boring. I decided to zig-zag my way through the thumb. I got near Sandusky and I figured I would take some back roads since I had already been through the town. I came upon an old building among the trees. I knew it was a school because the faded metal sign above the door had the words ” Standard School ”

I have seen many schoolhouses in Michigan that are a standard school. I searched and searched the internets to figure out what that is but I am still not exactly sure. I think it is a K-8 or K-12 school but I am not sure. I know a normal school is a school for training teachers. If you know what a standard school is please leave me a comment I am curious.

P.S. thank you to the Marysville library for having me and to everyone who came out to listen to me speak. It was a fun time. I have another presentation coming up in Lakeview at the Tamarack library on October 29th at 6 pm.

I also have one coming up in omer on November 4th at the Masonic Lodge at 7pm

Schools Out Forever

Posted on October 15, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Forgotten Places, Schools .

I took a photo of this old schoolhouse a few years ago. It stands, or more like stood, on old M-21 between Capac and Imlay City. I was scrolling through Facebook and I happen to notice a photo of an old school. someone commented that it was recently demolished. I then realized it was the schoolhouse near Imlay City

I am glad I got a pic of it while it was still standing. slowly the old schoolhouses are disappearing. They are a reminder of days past and how things have changed over the decades. I am not sure if they changed for the better or worse, but they have changed.

Reminder, I will be giving a presentation at the library in Marysville on October 21st. at 6:30pm you can find out more info HERE http://www.stclaircountylibrary.org/EventInfo.aspx?id=27001

I will be at the Tamarack District Library in Lakeview on Tuesday, October 29th at 6pm

The Haunted Hall in Ypsi

Posted on September 27, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Haunted Places, Schools .

Mary Ann Starkweather donated money to build this beautiful stone building in 1897 on the campus of Eastern Michigan. She requested the building be used for religious purposes. Her building became the home of the Students’ Christian Association. In 1928 the Christian association ended and in 1976 the Office of Religious Affairs was discontinued. After that, the building was used for campus offices.

Students and faculty believed Starkweather was upset her building was no longer being used as she intended and she began haunting the building. They say strange things happen in the hallways and in the basement of the old building. Most notably a janitor claimed someone or something touched him while he was working all alone in the basement. If you as any EMU student which building is haunted. they will most definitely say Starkweather. For myself, I am not sure about the hauntings, but it is a beautiful old building and a kind gift from a generous woman.

The Old Mill School

Posted on August 5, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools .

Between Romeo and New Haven is this old white schoolhouse in Ray Township. In 1863 Ray area farmers built what became known popularly as Mill School. Kindergarten through eighth grade students attended here until 1953. That year the school district consolidated with Romeo School District and it transferred the property to the township. Elections and community meetings were held in the building for many years. In 1983 the simple Greek Revival-style School became the Ray Township Library.

Finlandia’s Old Main

Posted on July 30, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools, upper peninsula .

When thinking of colleges in the Upper Peninsula many people think of Michigan Tech in Houghton. Across the river is the city of Hancock and Finlandia University. It started out as Soumi College and this building was the first one on campus. The historical marker in front reads:

Suomi College was founded in 1896 by the Finnish Evangelical Church of America. The cornerstone of Old Main, the first building erected at Suomi College, was laid on May 30, 1898. Jacobsville sandstone, quarried at the Portage Entry of the Keweenaw waterway, was brought here by barge, cut and used to construct Old Main. Dedicated on January 21, 1900, It contained a dormitory, kitchen, laundry, classrooms, offices, library, chapel and lounge. The burgeoning college quickly outgrew this building, and in 1901 a frame structure, housing a gym, meeting hall and music center was erected on an adjacent lot. The frame building was demolished when Nikander Hall, named for Suomi’s founder, J. K. Nikander, was constructed in 1939. The hall was designed by the architectural firm of Saarinen and Swanson.

Copemish School

Posted on July 27, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools .

One of my readers told me there was an old school in Copemish I need to check out. I have traveled M-115 many times and noticed the “giant arrow” (you know what I mean if you have seen it.)  but I have never gone thru downtown Copemish. I guess I a have always thought I have been to Copemish but actually M-115 passes next to it.  I made sure to take a drive-thru town and I saw the light green school on the outskirts of town. It’s a rather large two-story building and much large than a little one-room schoolhouse. Standing beside the school is another building that I am assuming was the gymnasium since a small portion of the sign is left with a G and a Y and half of an M. I can only imagine the basketball games that were played there on a cold Michigan winters day. I wish I knew more about the school’s history, but I can only wonder as I look at it sitting abandoned.

Starkweather Hall

Posted on July 11, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools .

Starkweather Hall is a religious and educational building located on the campus of Eastern Michigan University. It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1972  and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It is the oldest building on EMU’s campus.  Philanthropist Mary Ann Starkweather bequeathed $10,000 to construct the building for a religious center. When it was constructed, it was the only religious center at any teacher’s college in the United States. After construction, it was leased to the University’s Students’ Christian Association.

P.S. hopefully you saw this post O.K. I think my problem was with the facebook comments. It was causing problems with the new server. I will have to see what I can do about having comments on my posts.
