A Once Beautiful School

Posted on April 6, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools, upper peninsula .

I bet at one time this old school was a beautiful building and the pride of the community. It is in Paynesville in the western part of the Upper Peninsula. Not much exists in the town anymore and neither does the roof of this once beautiful old school. The harsh Michigan winter and weight of the snow have taken a toll on this old school.

Austin School

Posted on March 29, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Forgotten Places, Schools .

I came across this old boarded-up building in Albion. Knows as the Austin School, at the time of its construction in 1911, it was Albion’s first “modern” school.  By the 1960s newer schools with better facilities were built. Because the Austin School did not have a gymnasium or an auditorium the school closed in 1968. It was used as offices for the district for a time but now sits empty.

Sharon School

Posted on March 14, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools .

I saw this little brick schoolhouse north of Manchester. The stone over the front door reads SHARON DISTRICT #1 1890. It looks as if someone is taking good care of this old school. It has new windows and a new roof. I could not pass up stopping to take a pic.

Boon School

Posted on March 9, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools .

I saw this old building near the small town of Boon. I am not sure but it looks like an old schoolhouse. The little town of Boon is kind of in the middle of nowhere west of Cadillac. Whenever I drive down M-115 I always see the sign for it and wonder how the town of Boon got its name. I have never been able to find an official record but I always assumed it was named after Daniel Boone but it does not have the letter e on the end so maybe not.

Standard School

Posted on February 11, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools .

I saw this old building somewhere between Clare and Cadillac. I know it was a school since the sign near the peak of the roof reads STANDARD SCHOOL. It looks as if it has been a while since it has been used as a school. I am not sure the name of it but it is somewhat near Avondale.

The Lewis School

Posted on February 1, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools .

I have been going through some of my older photos lately since I have not been able to take a road trip in a while. I came across this photo of an old schoolhouse I saw near Kalkaska last winter. Doing a little research I learned that it was the Lewis School built in 1905. I also found out that a young couple is in the process of restoring the old building. You can follow along on their Instagram page here https://www.instagram.com/thelewisschool/

Columbia Crossroads

Posted on January 27, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools, Thumb .

A few miles south of Unionville is an old schoolhouse. Above the door is the lettering 1909 Columbia Dist. No. 2. Most of the old schools I find have the date when they were constructed, but I have never seen the date when they closed. I am not sure when this old schoolhouse last taught children inside its brick walls. However, I did find out that the school was part of a small town called Columbia Corners.  The community started in 1854 and it had a post office from 1879 until 1903. Not much of the town exists today, but I wonder how many kids learned to read and write in the little schoolhouse.

Fruitland District No.6 School

Posted on January 9, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools .

On a foggy winter day, I saw this old schoolhouse near the shores of White Lake north of Muskegon. The unique-looking belfry is what caught my attention. Most of the one-room schools I have seen in Michigan have a simple square belfry.  The historical marker in front of it gave a little history of this old building and reads:

This clapboard school with its octagonal belfry was erected here in 1883, following the organization of Fruitland District No.6 in 1882. The new school was built by Thomas Keilor on land donated by John McNeil. Students attended class here from 1883 through May 1948, when Fruitland Township School District consolidated with Whitehall. In 1961 the school was donated to the White Lake Community Club. The club deeded the property to Fruitland Township in 1990.

The Side Doors in the School

Posted on December 27, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools, Thumb .

I saw this old school on a farm near Bad Axe. I took this pic from the road and don’t trespass, but the doors on the side have me wondering what they were used for. The entrance is in the front so I am wondering if the side doors were an attached outhouse. One for boys and one for girls but it is only an uneducated guess.

Alma Schoolhouse

Posted on December 11, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools .

I saw this old building outside of Alma. I am not exactly sure what it was but it looks like an old schoolhouse. I love the row of windows or at least openings for them on the side. It faces east so the morning sun must have shone through on the students as they started their day.

It looks as if someone is cutting the grass so I assume it is not abandoned and I took this pic from the road since I don’t trespass.
