The House Thermometer

Posted on January 23, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms, Forgotten Places, Houses .

I saw this old farmhouse somewhere in central Michigan. I took some pics of it from the road and when I got back home to my computer I zoomed in on the photo. I was wondering about the yellow square on the side of the house. It looks like it was an old thermometer. I think it is broken since the needle is pointing somewhere warm. But I am not sure since the numbers are worn off the old metal thermometer. I did not need a gage to tell me what the temp was outside. with the snow and the wind whipping across the empty farm fields, I knew it was cold out.

La Rue House

Posted on January 20, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Houses .

I saw this old house in Elberta on the world famous M-22 Scenic Byway. I don’t know much about the house other than the sign out front declares it is the La Raue house build tin 1882 and designed by architect George F. Barber.

Since I don’t have a story to go along with the house now is a perfect time to announce the winner of the calendar giveaway. Congratulations to Kevin Witkowski, he is the winner of the Lost In Michigan wall calendar giveaway, please email me at Mike@huronphoto.com with your address and I will send out your calendar.

Thank you, everyone, for all the nice comments and suggestions of places to see and visit. I feel truly blessed to have so many kind and supportive people who read my posts every day.

The Delano Mansion

Posted on January 16, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Houses .

I saw this old victorian house in Allegan. The sign out front reads that it is The Delano Mansion Inn. Other than that I was not able to find any history on this spectacular looking house. I thought it was worth stopping for a photo.

I guess this gives me some extra time to just say thank you for taking the time from your busy day to stop and look at my posts. I hope you enjoy seeing them. I do my best to keep them random and interesting. It is a little challenging to get some nice pics during the winter with little snow but I still like to get out and see what I can find.

The Old Farmhouse

Posted on January 9, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Houses .

I saw this old farmhouse somewhere near Ionia. I don’t have any history or story to go with it. I saw it by the road as I was driving by so I had to stop and take a photo. If walls could talk I am sure they could tell a great story but unfortunately, they don’t. Sometimes I have to let the photo and your imagination create the story for me.

Thank you for following and I hope you are having a warm and safe winter.

The Red House

Posted on December 30, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Houses .

I was driving around the historic district in Cadillac admiring the houses when I saw this grand old red house on the corner. I could not find any history or info about it but I thought it was a beautiful looking house. I always enjoy getting off the main road away from the shops and touring some of Michigan’s city’s historic districts. They are usually private homes but there are some beautiful old houses mostly built by lumber barons.

Chesaning’s Stewart House

Posted on December 13, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Houses, Uncategorized .

stewart house Leamington and Madeline Stewart built this Queen Anne house in 1895 – 1897. The design was based on Design No. 53 in George F. Barber’s The Cottage Souvenir No. 2, a pattern book published in 1891. Barber advertised the house’s cost at $5,250. Pattern books were popular in the late 1800s as a way to obtain contemporary house plans at bargain prices. An Ontario native, Stewart practiced medicine in Chesaning until his death in 1933.

The House on Stewart Ave

Posted on November 29, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Houses .

Senator Charles Stewart purchased land at the far western edge of Kalamazoo. He built his house and then divided up the rest of the property and encouraged his friends to build houses near his. Newspaper editor Edgar Bartlett built this magnificent house on Stewart Avenue in 1886. It is now used as a bed and breakfast . You can see some pics of the inside on their website HERE

Grateful

Posted on November 28, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Barns and Farms, Houses .

I was not sure what to post today since it is one of the most important days of the year. A day set aside to reflect on our good fortune and be thankful for the blessing we have been given. I have been blessed with a kind and supportive family. I live in the United State of America and in my favorite state of Michigan.

I am grateful that you take the time to read my daily posts. I do my best to post something random and interesting. I hope to post something in your area or city where you live. And if not you will find someone else home to be worth learning about. What makes this journey of mine through the mitten state is that you get to experience it with me through the world wide web.

I hope you and your family had a wonderful thanksgiving. I am not sure where I am going next or what I will post tomorrow but I hope you will enjoy reading it.

P.S. I saw this old house somewhere near Gaylord. I am grateful for all those Americans who have worked so hard over the years to provide us with what we have today.

Doctor Lowry’s House

Posted on November 13, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Houses .

This stately white house with the yellow trim stands in downtown Hastings. A Michigan historical marker is proudly displayed in front of it and reads:

Oakland County physician George W. Lowry (1850-1922) purchased this lot and a medical practice from Dr. William A. Upjohn in 1887. In 1892-1894 he built one of Hasting’s finest residences, which also housed his medical office. The asymmetrical composition, stately turret, decorative bargeboards and spindlework typify Queen Anne architecture. In 1922 Dr. Haroutoune A. Adrounie (1882-1936) purchased the house and Lowry’s practice. Dr. Adrounie’s wife, Dorothy, lived in the house until her death in 1988.

The house is now a bed and breakfast. The interior is stunning and you can see pics of it on their website HERE

Ballentine House

Posted on November 4, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Houses .

I was roaming around Port Huron and I came upon this beautiful old victorian house. The sign out front read “Ballentine House Bed and Breakfast.” The house is named after Silas Ballentine who built it in the 1860s. He was the founder of Ballentine Dry Goods, which operated for nearly 100 years in Port Huron.
