Thinking of Autumn in Michgian

Posted on August 21, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn .

I know it is still August and scorching hot and Autumn seems so far away. If you like to leaf peep in the Upper Peninsula it won’t be long and the leaves will be changing. By mid-September, the leaves will be vibrant colors in the Keweenaw Peninsula with the rest of the U.P. following after.

It has been my experience this summer that the campgrounds, hotels, and lodges have been full with the influx of visitors enjoying Michigan’s great outdoors. In the past, I have gone into northern Michigan during the fall and then just looked for a place to stay when I have the need to. This year if you plan to head up north I think it would be wise to have reservations somewhere just so you know you have a place to sleep for the night because I think it will be very busy with people.

I know this is a little different than my regular posts but I figured I would just send out a reminder to make plans for this fall before it is too late. I am not sure what is going to happen with many schools being online so I am wondering if summer vacations will slow down after Labor Day.

For tips on taking Autumn photos, check out my post HERE

The Last Post …. Of The Decade

Posted on December 31, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Nature .

Here it is, December 31st, 2019. It is my last post for the decade and I was not sure what to post. I went through some of my photos.  I think this one on a back road in Autumn somewhere near Hell Michigan is one of my favorites. Thank you so much for going on this journey around the Mitten State with me. I have created almost one thousand posts since I started this website back in 2013 and hope to surpass the 1k mark soon. I do my best to keep my posts random and from all parts of the peninsulas.

I am not sure where the road will lead next but I have a lot of places I want to visit in the next decade. I hope you will follow me as I explore new places and as always thank you for taking the time to read my posts.

Have a happy New Year and a prosperous decade. See ya on the flip side

Mike Sonnenberg.

Grateful

Posted on November 28, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Barns and Farms, Houses .

I was not sure what to post today since it is one of the most important days of the year. A day set aside to reflect on our good fortune and be thankful for the blessing we have been given. I have been blessed with a kind and supportive family. I live in the United State of America and in my favorite state of Michigan.

I am grateful that you take the time to read my daily posts. I do my best to post something random and interesting. I hope to post something in your area or city where you live. And if not you will find someone else home to be worth learning about. What makes this journey of mine through the mitten state is that you get to experience it with me through the world wide web.

I hope you and your family had a wonderful thanksgiving. I am not sure where I am going next or what I will post tomorrow but I hope you will enjoy reading it.

P.S. I saw this old house somewhere near Gaylord. I am grateful for all those Americans who have worked so hard over the years to provide us with what we have today.

Barn Find

Posted on November 8, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Barns and Farms .

I stumbled across this barn while hiking in the Louis M. Groen Nature Preserve near Gaylord. It’s one of my favorite photos from this fall. I wish the leaves would stay at peak longer, but I guess that is what makes Autumn so special.

Lost In Michigan T-Shirts are available to order for a limited time. Some people have asked me for them. I made some and you can order them until Nov. 20th. After that, I have two bazaars in Bay City at Handy on Nov 23rd and in Saginaw at Arthur Hill on December 7th. It’s too hard for me to keep track of inventory while I am doing bazaars. If you want a shirt now is the time to order one

If you want a shirt while they are ON SALE you can order them HERE

Ghost Town Church

Posted on November 3, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Churches .

The town of Wildwood shows up on the map near Indian River. Not much is standing in the town. A few houses and this old church. I posted a photo of it a few years ago when it was in rough shape, you can see it HERE. It’s nice to see someone is taking care of the old church and put a fresh coat of paint on it.

Dollar Settlement

Posted on November 1, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Forgotten Places, upper peninsula .

Traveling down the road that follows the Lake Superior shoreline I came across this old Pullman car. It’s somewhere between Brimley and Paradise. According to the map, the town is or at least was Dollar Settlement. I could not find any info about this sparsely populated town. Someone told me that the old railroad car was brought in to convert to a diner, but it never materialized. Now it just sits in Dollar Settlement watching tourists pass by.

PS. I saw where Robert Dollar was the founder of Dollarville near Newberry and he built a dock on Lake Superior for his sawmill and lumber company. I am guessing that is where Dollar Settlement got its name from, but I have never been able to confirm it.

Applegate Barn

Posted on October 31, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Barns and Farms, Thumb .

I was zig-zagging my way across the Thumb when I saw this old barn hanging out with the Autumn trees. I could not tell you where it is located or probably even find it again. I was not paying close attention to the names of the roads I was traveling down. I know it is somewhere near Applegate but don’t ask me where I am just wondering a traveler seeing what I can discover along the way. There is no better place to get lost than Michigan in Autumn.

Reminder: My next presentation will be in Omer on Monday, November 4th at the historic Masonic Lodge at 7 pm.

Autumn Cemetery

Posted on October 30, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Cemetery .

I was out exploring the back roads before my presentation in Lakeville and I came upon this old cemetery. The Dickenson Whitesell cemetery looked so peaceful covered in autumn leaves.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Tamarak Library in Lakeview yesterday. It was a lot of fun meeting all of you. My next presentation will be in Omer on Monday, November 4th at the historic Masonic Lodge at 7 pm.

Shaff Schoolhouse

Posted on October 28, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Schools .

This old schoolhouse is known as the Shaff School. It sits a few miles northwest of Gaylord and is one of the few remaining schoolhouses still standing in Otsego County. It has probably survived the harsh Michigan weather because it is constructed with fieldstone.

Antique Alley

Posted on October 25, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in autumn, Nature, Parks .

This row of old forgotten vehicles, abandoned from an old sawmill town, is deep within the Groen Nature Preserve. The preserve is in Otsego County near Johannesburg. The property once belonged to Louis M. Groen. He invented the Filet O Fish sandwich and owned 43 McDonalds franchise locations. After his death, he donated the property to Otsego County for use as a nature preserve.
