Big Red School

Posted on February 11, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools .

I have driven past this old building on M-25 east of Bay City several times. It looks like an old school but I have never been able to find any information about it. It looks to be a lot larger than just one room but it looks as if it has closed many years ago.

Lost in Holloway

Posted on February 10, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Ghost towns .

I was traveling down the backroads from Dundee to Adrian when I came across this old building. It looks like it was a store, saloon, hotel or something. It was on Holloway road so I can only assume it is or was the town of Holloway. The town sprang up along the railroad tracks that

An Old House and a Pine Tree

Posted on February 9, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Forgotten Places, Houses .

I saw this old house on the backroads somewhere near Alba. I imagine the pine tree in front of it was just a little sapling when the home was constructed. The house and its family watched the little sapling grow over the years. Now the house is empty and the towering old pine tree kindly

The Five Channels Dam

5 five channels dam Au Sable oscoda

The lower peninsula does not have many waterfalls compared to the U.P. If you are near the Ausable River, not far from lumberman’s monument, is the Five Channels Dam. If the gate is open water comes gushing out like a spectacular waterfall. With all the rain we have been getting and high water levels I

The D. H. Day Farm

Posted on February 7, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms, Winter Wonderland .

If you have ever been to the dune climb in the Sleeping Bear Dunes than you have seen the D.H. Day farm. It was also known as “Oswegatchi” after the New York community where his father was born and the Oswegatchi River where D. H. Day played as a boy. David Henry Day built this

The Hoax and the Hack House

Posted on February 6, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Houses, people .

Just outside of the southern Michigan town of Milan is a beautiful pale green farmhouse. It is a little more ornate and larger than your average farmhouse. The house was built by Olive Friend on land purchased from her uncle Henry Hack. Olive, who was a native of Milan, built the home for her family

Star City: a Fallen Star and Ghost Town

Posted on February 4, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Ghost towns, Schools .

I love the name Star City, It sounds like a promising place full of celebrities with glitz and glamor. In reality, it is or was in the middle of nowhere west of Houghton Lake in the center of the Mitten. An old schoolhouse and cemetery are all that remains of the town. I found a

Abandoned Places In Michigan to Explore

Posted on February 3, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Forgotten Places, Ghost towns .

Over the years Michigan has seen several booms and busts from lumber to manufacturing. Many places have been abandoned, from factories to whole towns. Some of these locations in the Mitten State can still be seen and visited. They may have been abandoned for their original purpose they are still maintained by state and local

The Witch’s Hat in Michigan

Posted on February 1, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Train Depots .

Michigan has a few train depots with a cone-shaped roof but the most well known one is called “The Witch’s Hat Depot.” It proudly stands in South Lyon. It is no longer used for passengers to ride the rais but is a historical museum. The historical marker next to it reads: In the late nineteenth
