Defending A Piece of Paper

Posted on November 11, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Uncategorized .

More than two centuries ago a ragtag army fought the most powerful empire in the world. It was an impossible endeavor and the king thought they were destined to fail. The desire for freedom from the British Monarchy could not be defeated. Shortly after their victory from oppression, the founding fathers wrote on a piece of paper the words that outline the new nation’s government by the people and the freedoms granted to its citizens The virtue and authority of this piece of paper does not come from the men who wrote it. Rather, from the men and women that have taken an oath to defend it with their lives.

Thank you is not a strong enough word to use for the sacrifices made by the veterans who have fought, and continue to fight, defending a piece of paper that defines our nation. Until a word is created in the English language to convey my gratitude, all I can say is Thank You and hope that they will understand how much my freedom means to me.

The Standard School in the Trees

Posted on October 23, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools, Thumb, Uncategorized .

On my trip to Marysville I could have taken the expressway but that would be rather boring. I decided to zig-zag my way through the thumb. I got near Sandusky and I figured I would take some back roads since I had already been through the town. I came upon an old building among the trees. I knew it was a school because the faded metal sign above the door had the words ” Standard School ”

I have seen many schoolhouses in Michigan that are a standard school. I searched and searched the internets to figure out what that is but I am still not exactly sure. I think it is a K-8 or K-12 school but I am not sure. I know a normal school is a school for training teachers. If you know what a standard school is please leave me a comment I am curious.

P.S. thank you to the Marysville library for having me and to everyone who came out to listen to me speak. It was a fun time. I have another presentation coming up in Lakeview at the Tamarack library on October 29th at 6 pm.

I also have one coming up in omer on November 4th at the Masonic Lodge at 7pm

Michigan’s Incarcerated Ghosts

Posted on October 7, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Haunted Places, Uncategorized .

I take a lot of photos of old historic buildings from around the state. I especially like the ornate victorian ara building with elaborate stonework and hand-carved woodwork. The old Mecosta Jail was built in 1893 and is the oldest public structure in the city of Big Rapids.

It’s interesting the strange things I find out about some of the places I visit in the state. I took a pic of this old building because I thought it was interesting. I did not imagine I would find out how it as a dark entity inside that haunts the old jail. I was doing a little research on the building and I came across a video with the president of the Big Rapids Historic Preservation Society.

The old jail had a tunnel that extended to the courthouse to transport prisoners to arraignments and court hearings. It comes out into an old stone basement and I can only imagine what it must have been like for prisoners back in the day to be taken in handcuffs and chains down that old dark tunnel. Afterward, being taken back to a confined cell with large flat iron bars and thick solid steel doors. I am not sure if it is haunted, but it is a spooky place.

Here is the video I came across describing some of the strange things that happen in the old building. you can watch it on Youtube HERE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOH_SVMTgqc

Posted on July 9, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Uncategorized .

I have been in the process of moving my website to a different server. I think I have everything up and running again. It was a long and nerve-wracking process but hopefully, It’s over and I can get back to posting on a regular basis.

This is my first post on the new server and if you got your email then it’s working. Thank you all for subscribing and I hope you enjoy getting your email. I do my best to post random stuff from around Michigan that I think you will find interesting.

If you are wondering about the pic in this post it is an old barn near Lupton. It has nothing to do with the post, I just liked the photo.

Engine House No. 11 in Detroit

Posted on May 10, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Uncategorized .

Detroit Engine House no 11

Engine House #11 in Detroit, on Gratiot Ave, is the oldest remaining firehouse in Detroit. Engine Company No. 11 was organized as the “Steam Fire Engine Company #11” on January 1, 1884. The original equipment included a horse-drawn Silsby Steam engine and hose reel cart. The company converted to motorized operation in 1916, obtaining a Seagrave gasoline propelled pumping engine.

The firehouse tower on the southeast side of the building was used to dry hoses and also by the fire officer to spot smoke and direct the team of Horses to the fire. The Tower was shortened during World War II so an air raid siren could be installed. In 1972, Engine Company No. 11 moved to new quarters. The building was used by the Emergency Medical Unit until 1976. It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1975 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

P.S. I try to avoid getting cars and trucks in my pics but since I had a truck in this one I changed it to a Faygo truck since the bottling plant is right down the road.
