This old building sits a few miles away from Beaverton. With the framework at the top I am assuming it was a schoolhouse at one time. It is a beautiful looking building made with fieldstone. I could not find any info about it and it sits on private property next to someone’s house.

This little pink schoolhouse stands in Bicentennial Park in the city of Mason. The school was built in 1854, and moved to its current location in 1976. The exact reason why the school is pink is unknown. One of the predominant theories is that red paint was donated, but there was not enough to paint the entire building. It was mixed with white paint turning it into a pink hue but creating enough to paint the entire school.

This building sits between Ionia and Saranac in the Ionia State Recreation Area. It has Dist. No. 4 1898 over the door. It was the Section 34, Berlin Township, school and was built to replaces the Sessions School which was built across the road. Known as the “Posse House.” Deeded to Ionia County for use by the Sheriff’s Posse, it has a star painted on the front that reads “Ionia County Sheriff’s Posse Clubhouse”. I assume they use it as a staging area for riding horses through the recreation area.

The Township of Eden on the west side of the state located in Mason and Lake County is mostly rural farmland. I saw this old school house surrounded by the farm fields, like it is still waiting for students to come through the door. Carved in the stone above the door is Eden Dist No.2 1892. I grew up in the big city and so did my parents and grand parents. They walked to school and growing up in the 70’s I walked to and from school on days when the weather was decent. I could not imagine the kids walking to school in the winter with the winds howling across the empty farm fields. It’s not like they had busses and cars in the 1890’s. I suppose they could hitch up the horse to the wagon. I wonder if they had remote start on the horses back then.

East of downtown Gladwin is a historical village with old log cabins and a red schoolhouse. It was the Billings Township School District #2 school building. It was dismantled and transported in sections to the historical site after being donated to the Gladwin Historical Society in 1986. It stand alongside other donated buildings moved to the Gladwin Historical Village. The old schoolhouse now stands as a museum to show visitors of days gone by.

This little schoolhouse stands a few miles south of Hastings. From 1872 to 1963 Hope Township children attended school in this building, known as the Hinds School because of its location at the crossroads community of Hinds Corners. The school had stood vacant for almost twenty years when Robert Casey, a Hinds student during the 1930s, purchased it in 1981. Casey (1928-1997), a teacher here and in Hastings, restored the building as a place for children to visit.

I saw this old school somewhere between Kingsley and Buckley south of Traverse City. I don’t know anything about it but it looks like it was a nice school at one time.

This old schoolhouse sits down the road from the Sparr Mall. I am not sure what its story is, but the sign on the front reads, Dist. No. 2 Dover. It looks as if someone is or was working on converting it into a home.

P.S. I have been posting daily for several years not but lately I have not been traveling because of the gas prices. I still have photos to share but I not as much as I would like. I wanted to let you know that I may be skipping a few days a week so if you don’t get your daily email that is why. I really miss my road trips and hope that the price of gas will come down soon.
