The Love Barn

Posted on July 3, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms .

I saw this little old barn on Love Road near Bellevue. I don’t know anything about it but I thought it was a cute looking little barn. I am not sure where I am going sometimes but I do know you see some rather interesting things traveling the back roads.

The Old Barn Near Howell

Posted on June 23, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms .

howell michigan barn

I was out roaming the back roads around Howell and I came across this old barn with the ivy growing up the sides. Like most of the old barns I photograph, I don’t know any history or stores about it. I can only imagine the farmer’s horses had a nice home when it was built, but then again I am a city boy and not a farming expert either, but I do know a pretty old barn when I see one.  I was not able to spend a lot of time in Howell but it is a beautiful town, I need to get back there soon.

The Barn In the Woods

Posted on May 8, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms .

I saw this old barn in the woods near Sharon Hollow northwest of Manchester. I figure it must be an old barn since it has a stone foundation. It seems odd to see this barn surrounded by trees and not farmland. Maybe it was farmland at one time and the trees grew up around the barn after the farmer left. I am not sure what the story is but I thought it was a beautiful old barn so I stopped and took a pic of it.

Another Old Barn

Posted on April 18, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms .

I saw this old barn, or at least what is left of it, somewhere near East Jordan. It looks like time has not been too good to this place, and I am sure the Michigan winter does not have any mercy for it.

No story or history to go along with this pic today, I hope you are doing well and thank you for subscribing to my emails. I hope it brings a little moment of joy to your day or at least a nice distraction for a few seconds.  If you know someone who you think would like my emails I hope you will share my website with them.

Michigan’s Unique Old Stone Barn

Posted on April 10, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms .

Michigan has several old historic barns and a few of them are constructed with stone. This old barn northwest of Manchester has to be one of Michigan’s most unique barns. It was constructed in 1853 by Michael Porter. He came to the area in 1834 and served as the district supervisor for a few years. The house he constructed burned down but this unique cobblestone barn constructed with hand-split fieldstone and trimmed with brick still stands as a reminder to the pioneers that came before us.

The Sears Barn on 66

Posted on March 19, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms .

I saw this old barn near Sears on 66. I suppose I need to clarify that first sentence because some peoples first thoughts are of the store where you get your toughskin jeans and the road that you get your kicks on from Chicago to L.A. Sears is a small town near the center of the mitten on M-66 which runs north and south through the center of the state from the Indiana border to Charlevoix.

The Red Barns of Carson City

Posted on March 10, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms .

I saw these red barns soaking up the spring sunshine not far from Carson City. I don’t know any history about them but I thought they looked nice so stopped and took a pic. I hope this warm weather stays around but I have lived in Michigan long enough to not trust Mother Nature. You never know when she is gonna get angry and give one more snowstorm to remind us who is in charge.

If you ever wondered why barns are usually red, according to the internets years ago farmers would use linseed oil to protect the wood and the easiest pigment is rust which would turn the oil red. I am not sure if it is 100 percent accurate but I can’t imagine the internets would give out false information. ( that’s sarcasm just in case you are unsure, there should be a sarcastic font)

The D. H. Day Farm

Posted on February 7, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms, Winter Wonderland .

If you have ever been to the dune climb in the Sleeping Bear Dunes than you have seen the D.H. Day farm. It was also known as “Oswegatchi” after the New York community where his father was born and the Oswegatchi River where D. H. Day played as a boy. David Henry Day built this farm in the 1880s and its unique looking barn is one of the most photographed barns in Michigan.

The Weight Of Snow

Posted on January 30, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms, Forgotten Places, Houses .

I have shoveled enough snow to know that it can get pretty heavy, especially the wet stuff. I saw this old farmhouse somewhere near Kalkaska and the roof had collapsed. I assume it was from the weight of all the snow over the years. I don’t know its story, if only walls could talk.

I have had several people ask me about Lost In Michigan T-Shirts. I was screening and shipping them myself but I am limited in the colors and sizes I can do. Plus it takes away from my time to create more posts. I have decided to go with Teespring for making shirts. I like the prices and options they offer, plus it gives me a chance to do more designs.  I hope you will take a look at my new apparel store on Teespring by clicking HERE

Thank you for all your support, books and T-shirts help me with expenses to do this website and I hope you enjoy seeing my posts every day.

The Stone Barn

Posted on January 28, 2020 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Barns and Farms .

I see a lot of old barns on my travels around Michigan but I have not seen many constructed with fieldstones. I saw this magnificent barn near Elmira. I don’t have a story to go with it, so I will just let you know how much I appreciate you taking the time to look at my posts.
