The Gladstone Lighthouse

Posted on September 20, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Lighthouses, upper peninsula .

The Gladstone Lighthouse welcomes boats into the Gladstone Harbor on Lake Michigan. Gladstone is on the south side of the Upper Peninsula near Escanaba. The lighthouse was built in 2010 when upgrades were made to Van Cleve Park. The park is a wonderful place to stop on a road trip along US-2 and while you are there you can check out one of Michigan’s newest lighthouses.

Haynes Old Stone Church

Posted on September 19, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Churches .

This old stone church sits between Alpena and Oscoda on Michigan’s east side. The first church built by the Presbyterians was built in Alcona in 1880 but moved to where the stone church now stands in 1886. In June of 1924, the original church was destroyed by fire when that was ignited from the sparks from the fire of a nearby farmhouse. The church was rebuilt by volunteers using stones from surrounding farm fields and opened for worship in 1936.

The Pump House

Posted on September 18, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Historic Places, Iconic Buildings .

If you have ever been to the Holland State Park beach you have probably been past this old brick building. It was built in 1901 as an Edison Electric Power Plant to provide lighting for the Ottawa Beach Hotel complex. Sadly the hotel burned down in 1923 and pumps were installed in the old powerhouse to supply water to the surrounding cottages. The “pumphouse” was used until the 1980s but was decommissioned when the municipal water supply came in from Holland. More recently the pumphouse has been converted into a local museum and is on the boardwalk along Lake Macatawa.

The Half Mushroom House

Posted on September 17, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Houses .

Located around Charlevoix are some unique houses constructed out of stone with thatched roofs. Many people refer to them as “mushroom houses” because of their unique construction. They were built by self-taught builder Earl Young using locally sourced building materials. One of the more interesting houses he built is known as the ” Half House ” because it has a flat wall on one side like it was sliced in half. The houses are privately owned and not open to tourists, but driving around town you can see some of the whimsical looking homes.

The Spring in the Thumb

Posted on September 16, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Thumb .

Where M-24 crosses the Evergreen Creek between Mayville and Lapeer is a small roadside park. In the middle of the park is a stone and wooden structure with a natural spring where water flows out. It is a nice place to stop for a break on a road trip around the farmlands of the lower Thumb.

Posted on September 15, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in presentations .

This fall I will be giving two presentations.

The first one will be

Tuesday, October 26th At 7:00pm

Milford Independent Cinema
945 E. Summit St.
Milford, MI  48381

doors open at 6:30pm, and the presentation starts at 7pm.

Because it is close to Holloween, this presentation will be about some of the spooky and supposedly haunted places around Michigan that I have visited.

I will be around after to sign books and say hello. You are welcome to bring your book for me to autograph or I will have books available for purchase.

The second presentation will be

Thursday, November 11th At 7:00PM

Rochester Hills Public Library

500 Olde Towne Rd, Rochester, MI 48307

This presentation will be about some of my favorite places I have visited around Michigan. I will be around afterward to sign books.

I am looking forward to giving live presentations again.

Some people have asked me about purchasing calendars. They are available online but, I did not get any printed for me to sell at presentations. If you would like a calendar they are available from Zazzle.com. It is not what I prefer but it is the best solution that I could come up with. You can learn more about my calendars HERE

Point Iroquois Lighthouse

Posted on September 15, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Lighthouses, upper peninsula .

Point Iroquois Lighthouse stands along Lake Superior between Whitefish Point and Brimley. The lighthouse was constructed in 1870 and deactivated in 1962. It now operates as a museum in the summer months. While most tourists visit Whitefish Point Lighthouse this historic beacon is worth visiting and it is a beautiful drive along the Lake Superior shoreline from Paradise to Brimley.

Iron Mountain Depot

Posted on September 14, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Train Depots, upper peninsula .

This old railroad depot stands near downtown Iron Mountain in the Upper Peninsula. The old station was built in 1910. I am not sure when it closed but It looks as if it has been a long time since anyone has taken a train ride from this historic depot.

The Old School in Coe

Posted on September 13, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools .

Driving around the farm fields east of Shepherd I came across this old building which looked like a schoolhouse or church or township hall or maybe all the above.  I took a few pics and then when I got back home I looked it up on google and found out it was in the township of Coe which was named after Lieutenant Governor George A. Coe in 1855.

Posted on September 12, 2021 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Churches, Thumb .

The Linton Memorial Chapel is a little log chapel that stands in the Pioneer Log Village. The chapel was originally home to Robert Linton. It is now a chapel in and part of the historic park in Bad Axe.
