Chittenden Elevator

Posted on May 17, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Grain Elevators .

I saw this old grain elevator in the town of Grant. the sign on the side reads Chittenden Elevator, other than that I don’t know anything about it. Most small towns and even large cities in Michigan have a grain elevator and I like taking pics of them. No fascinating history or insightful thoughts I just like to keep my posts random and I liked this pic so I figured I would post it.

I hope all is going well for you and once again thank you for taking the time from your busy day to look at my posts.

The House with a Secret

Posted on May 16, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Houses .

I would never imagine that I would see this house on a television show when I saw it last year. I liked the yellow and green paint scheme with the wrought iron fence along the sidewalk so I snapped a few pics of it. It is on the opposite street corner from the Hackly House which grandeur and size overshadow this old house.  If you are not familiar with the Hackley house you can see my post about it HERE.  When I was watching The Curse Of The Civil War Gold  I was surprised to see this old house on the show. They believe a tunnel ran from this house to the Hackley house next to it. I am not sure I believe the story of the gold being dumped into Lake Michigan from a train ferry, but I do enjoy watching it and seeing the locations around Michigan they explore.

P.S. I do wonder if the legend of the treasure chests near Poverty Island could be started from the gold that Hackley supposedly took from Jefferson Davis. You can read my post about that HERE

The Bizarre Ruins in Freda

Posted on May 15, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Forgotten Places, upper peninsula .

Along the shoreline of Lake Superior are a tall smokestack and concrete ruins. It is near the town of Freda west of Houghton in the Keweenaw Peninsula. The maze of weathered concrete and rusty rebar is what remains of the Champion Mill that processed the copper-rich rocks. Trains would pull into the mill and dump their cars filled with copper infused rocks. The mill would pulverize the rocks and mix them with water from lake superior creating a sludge rich in copper. It was then taken by train to Houghton for further processing and then poured into ingots and shipped around the world.

The mill closed in 1967 and it was stripped of any metal for scrap. I made the trip to see the ruins, but the road stops at a cliff that overlooks the remains. A barbed wire fence restricts people from getting to close. It was interesting to see but unfortunately, access for visitors is not allowed. It was not a wasted trip since I also stopped to see the waterfalls and old train bridge in nearby Redridge, but that is a post for another day.

Engine House No. 11 in Detroit

Posted on May 10, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Uncategorized .

Detroit Engine House no 11

Engine House #11 in Detroit, on Gratiot Ave, is the oldest remaining firehouse in Detroit. Engine Company No. 11 was organized as the “Steam Fire Engine Company #11” on January 1, 1884. The original equipment included a horse-drawn Silsby Steam engine and hose reel cart. The company converted to motorized operation in 1916, obtaining a Seagrave gasoline propelled pumping engine.

The firehouse tower on the southeast side of the building was used to dry hoses and also by the fire officer to spot smoke and direct the team of Horses to the fire. The Tower was shortened during World War II so an air raid siren could be installed. In 1972, Engine Company No. 11 moved to new quarters. The building was used by the Emergency Medical Unit until 1976. It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1975 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

P.S. I try to avoid getting cars and trucks in my pics but since I had a truck in this one I changed it to a Faygo truck since the bottling plant is right down the road.

Michigan’s Little Lighthouse

Posted on May 9, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Lighthouses, upper peninsula .

At first glance looking at this photo you might think it was Point Iroquois Lighthouse near Brimley but upon closer inspection, something seems a little bit odd. The house is actually a small replica located next to a pond near Bay Mills Community College on West Lakeshore Drive. I am not sure what the story is or who built it but I noticed it a few years ago. If you take the trip from Brimley to the T-Falls be sure to look for this little lighthouse. It’s across the road from the Native American cemetery. I would tell you about it but that’s a post for a different day.

The Forgotten Schoolhouse in the Thumb

Posted on May 7, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Schools, Thumb .

I saw this old school house somewhere between Bad Axe and Ubly. I can only assume it was an old school since there is a swing set next to it.

The Old Jail

Posted on May 6, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Historic Places, Iconic Buildings .

Big Rapids became the county seat of Mecosta County in 1859 and incorporated as a city in 1869. This building served as the county jail and sheriff’s residence from 1893 until 1965.It’s the oldest public structure in the original plat of the village of Big Rapids, it features gable and hip roofs and turrets characteristic of Queen Anne style architecture. A tunnel ran underground from the old jail to the courthouse for inmates to be transferred for court appearances.

The Wooden Water Tower

Posted on May 2, 2019 by Mike Sonnenberg Posted in Water Tower .

Among the last of the wooden water towers in Michigan, the Grant Water Towers was built beside the depot in 1891 by the Grand Rapids, Newaygo and Lakeshore Railroad. It cost $1,910 and could hold 42,648 gallons of water. Although train service ceased in 1966, the Water Tower was used well into the 1980s as a water reserve for the fire departmant. In 2008, after being moved 128 feet east of its original location, the cypress and pine tower was restored.
