Northeast of Ann Arbor on Plymouth Road is the small town of Dixboro. In 1824, retired sea Captain John Dix purchased about 500 acres of land. He built a house and a sawmill and then plotted a section of land that became the town of Dixboro. The little village was growing quickly until the railroad decided to lay tracks through Ypsilanti instead of Dixboro.

West of Grayling along M-72 near Bear Lake is this beautiful log church. With its brown logs and green roof, it reminded me of playing with Lincoln Logs when I was a child.

I saw this old farmhouse near the town of Chase. It looks as if it has been a long time since a Christmas tree was set up inside.

This iron conical tower light stands in the trees along M-28 not far from the town of Christmas. It replaced the wooden lighthouse that was moved to Munising in 1914. I have driven the stretch on M-28 along the Lake Superior shoreline a few times. I knew this tower was located somewhere east of Christmas but I missed it because you can’t see it from the road hidden in the trees. There is an overgrown two-track that leads to it but you have to know where to find it. It is not an overly impressive lighthouse but it is one of the tallest iron tower navigational lights on the Great Lakes.
It has been decommissioned for a while and I am not sure who owns it, But it would be a nice location for a park. Being so close to the town of Christmas I think it should be painted Red White and Green and decorated in a Christmas theme. It would make for a nice place to stop along Lake Superior but unless you know about it many people just zoom on by without stopping.
P.S. I am not sure if the tower has a working light anymore but I ” turned it on ” in photoshop since I don’t like seeing a lighthouse without a hopeful beacon shining.

African American investors Wilber Lemon, A.E. Wright, Marion, and Ella Author from Chicago and Cleveland purchased land from Bookings Lumber Company along the shoreline of Woodland Lake in the 1920s. They created a resort community for African Americans between White Cloud and Baldwin. I saw this old two-story building when I passed through the area. I wonder if it was an old boarding house from the lumber company or maybe a hotel during the days when the resort community was in its prime.

This massive red and white brick house stands behind the historic Eaton County Courthouse in Charlotte. It was built in 1873 and was used as a residence for the sheriff and his family. A large jail complex stood off the back of the house but it was demolished in the 1990s and the house was converted into commercial office space.

Depot Town in Ypsilanti, all decked out for the holidays. The area was called Depot Town after the nearby railroad station opened in the late 1830s, most of the buildings standing today were constructed between 1850 and 1880. Over the years, Depot Town has included hotels, an Underground Railroad station, an American Civil War barracks, and a building that has housed a bar and restaurant continuously for more than 150 years, switching to soft drinks during Prohibition. Today it is still a popular place to get something to eat or drink and shop in the many stores along the stretch of historic buildings.

Since the 1950s an ice tree has been made in front of the county building in Gaylord. At the beginning of winter when the temperatures stay below freezing a framework with a water hose is placed outside. As water cascades down it will freeze creating an “Ice Tree.” In years with cold winters the tree can grow to rather large sizes. This year with the warmer temperatures it was not that large but it is still beautiful and unique.

This old wooden church stands near Hastings. I am not sure what its story is but it looks as if it has been a long time since a service was held inside.

This magnificent stone building stands on Pheonix Street in South Haven. At first glance, it looks like a church but it is actually a literary club. It was constructed in 1893 by the Scott Club named after Sir Walter Scott. The building has two stained glass windows created in Austria portray Sir Walter Scott and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The club continues to this day providing cultural enrichment programs to the community.
